As this is my first submission to the Ceph docs, I want to start by saying a big thank you to the Ceph team for all the efforts that have been put into improving the docs. The improvements already made have been many and have made it easier for me to operate Ceph. In https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rados/troubleshooting/troubleshooting-mon/#…, the section "What does it mean when a Monitor’s state is ``leader`` or ``peon``?" discusses those two mon states only in the context of an issue that has a health detail entry. However, the title of that section is not scoped to just that particular case and so could lead to confusion because during normal Ceph operations, there is a mon that has state leader and the other mons have state peon, as can be seen by the values of state returned by ceph tell <mon_name> mon_status. To alleviate any such confusion, I recommend inserting the following before the existing text in that section: "During normal Ceph operations when the cluster is in the HEALTH_OK state, one monitor in the Ceph cluster will be in the leader state and the rest of the monitors will be in the peon state. The state of a given monitor can be determined by examining the value of the state key returned by ceph tell <mon_name> mon_status." Note the difference of convention in ceph command presentation. In https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rados/troubleshooting/troubleshooting-mon/#…, mon.X uses X to represent the portion of the command to be replaced by the operator with a specific value. However, that may not be clear to all readers, some of whom may read that as a literal X. I recommend switching convention to something that makes visually explicit any portion of a command that an operator has to replace with a specific value. One such convention is to use <> as delimiters marking the portion of a command that an operator has to replace with a specific value, minus the delimiters themselves. I'm sure there are other conventions that would accomplish the same goal and provide the <> convention as an example only. Also, the actual name of a mon is not clear due to the variety of mon name formats. The value of the NAME column returned by ceph orch ps --daemon-type mon and the return from ceph mon dump follow the format of mon.<host> whereas the value of name returned by ceph tell <mon_name> mon_status, the mon line returned by ceph -s, and the return from ceph mon stat follow the format of <host>. Unifying the return for the mon name value of all those commands could be helpful in establishing the format of a mon name, though that is probably easier said than done. In addition, in https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rados/configuration/mon-config-ref/#configu…, mon names are stated to use alpha notation by convention, but that convention is not followed by cephadm in the clusters that I've deployed. Cephadm also uses a minimal ceph.conf file with configs in the mon database. I recommend this section be updated to mention those changes. Are ceph commands backward compatible?

Hi, I'm developing some tools that execute ceph commands like rbd. During development, I have come to wonder about compatibility of ceph commands. I'd like to use ceph commands which version is >= the version used by ceph daemons. It results in executing new ceph commands against ceph clusters using old versions. So I'd like to know my tools are expected to work fine. Coud someone tell me whether ceph commands are backword compatible? The officlal document didn't have the information I needed. Thanks, Satoru

deep scrubb and scrubb does get the job done

Hi our cluster is on warning for more than two weeks we had to move some pools form ssd to hdd and it looked good ... but somehow the pgs scrubb does not get done with his jobs * PG_NOT_DEEP_SCRUBBED : 171 pgs not deep-scrubbed in time * PG_NOT_SCRUBBED : 132 pgs not scrubbed in time Till the move the cluster was happy without any warnings... There is no have load on the cluster I don't see why the cluster get not done with that... is there a way to find out why ... Thanks for any hint Manuel

Hi all, My Ceph setup: - 12 OSD nodes, 4 OSD nodes per rack. Replication of 3, 1 replica per rack. - 20 spinning SAS disks per node. - Some nodes have 256GB RAM, some nodes 128GB. - CPU varies between Intel E5-2650 and Intel Gold 5317. - Each node has 10Gbit/s network. Using rados bench I am getting decent results (depending on block size): - 1000 MB/s throughput, 1000 IOps with 1MB block size - 30 MB/s throughput, 7500 IOps with 4K block size Unfortunately not getting the same performance with Rados Gateway (S3). - 1x HAProxy with 3 backend RGW's. I am using Minio Warp for benchmarking (PUT). I am 1 Warp server and 5 Warp clients. Benchmarking towards the HAProxy. Results: - Using 10MB object size, I am hitting the 10Gbit/s link of the HAProxy server. Thats good. - Using 500K object size, I am getting a throughput of 70 up to 150 MB/s with 140 up to 300 obj/s. It depends on the concurrency setting of Warp. It look likes the objects/s is the bottleneck, not the throughput. Max memory usage is about 80-90GB per node. CPU's are quite idling. Is it reasonable to expect more IOps / objects/s for RGW with my setup? At this moment I am not able to find the bottleneck what is causing the low obj/s. Ceph version is 15.2. Thanks!

This is why it's bad to use the packages shipped by the distribution: When upgrading the distribution on one node you also upgrade the Ceph packages. download.ceph.com has packages for Ubuntu 22.04 and nothing for 24.04. Testing CEPH scrubbing / self-healing capabilities

Hello, I wanted to try out (lab ceph setup) what exactly is going to happen when parts of data on OSD disk gets corrupted. I restarted the OSD daemon on this host to make sure it flushes any potentially buffered data. It restarted OK without noticing anything, which was expected. Then I ran ceph osd scrub 5 ceph osd deep-scrub 5 And waiting for all scheduled scrub operations for all PGs to finish. No inconsistency was found. No errors reported, scrubs just finished OK, data are still visibly corrupt via hexdump. Did I just hit some block of data that WAS used by OSD, but was marked deleted and therefore no longer used or am I missing something? I would expect CEPH to detect disk corruption and automatically replace the invalid data with a valid copy? I use only replica pools in this lab setup, for RBD and CephFS. Thanks

Safe to move misplaced hosts between failure domains in the crush tree?

Hi We have 3 servers for replica 3 with failure domain datacenter: -1 4437.29248 root default -33 1467.84814 datacenter 714 -69 69.86389 host ceph-flash1 -34 1511.25378 datacenter HX1 -73 69.86389 host ceph-flash2 -36 1458.19067 datacenter UXH -77 69.86389 host ceph-flash3 We made a mistake when we moved the servers physically so while the replica 3 is intact the crush tree is not accurate. If we just remedy the situation with "ceph osd crush move ceph-flashX datacenter=Y" we will just end up with a lot of misplaced data and some churn, right? Or will the affected pool go degraded/unavailable? Mvh. Issue with ceph sharedfs

I am deploying Rook 1.10.13 with Ceph 17.2.6 on our Kubernetes clusters. We are using the Ceph Shared Filesystem a lot and, we have never faced an issue. Lately, we have deployed it on Oracle Linux 9 VMs (previous/existing deployments use Centos/RHEL 7) and we are facing the next issue: We have 30 worker nodes running a StatefulSet with 30 replicas (each one running on a worker node). The pod in that StatefulSet runs a container with a java process that waits until jobs are submitted. When a job arrives, it processes the request and writes the data into a ceph sharedfs. That ceph sharedfs is a single PVC that is used by all the pods in the StatefulSet. My intuition says that it could happen that certain sharedfs released caps cannot reach the MDS and then that portion of the sharedfs is locked for good. But I am completely making this up. I’d appreciate it if anyone could provide some indications about how to troubleshoot it or give me some hints. We have some clusters running in production with almost the same configuration (but the OS) and everything runs ok there. But we cannot find the reason why we are getting this behavior here.

Hi all, I have configured a ceph cluster to be used as an object store with a combination of SSDs and HDDs, where the block.db is stored on LVM on SSDs and the OSD block is stored on HDDs. I have set up one SSD for storing metadata (rocksDB), and five HDDs are associated with it to store the OSD blocks. During a disk replacement test, if one SSD that stores the block.db fails, all five associated OSDs go down. When replacing and recovering the failed SSD, it seems necessary to reconfigure the five OSDs, which takes too long to recover data and has significant performance impact. So here are two questions: - Is it common practice to configure SSDs with block.db and associate them with five HDD disks to store OSD blocks when using eight SSDs and forty HDDs? Or would it be better to only store the rgw index on SSDs? I am also curious about the difference in performance between these configurations. - If SSDs are configured with block.db as described above, will it be necessary to reinstall the five associated OSDs (HDDs) if one SSD fails ? Also, is there a way to reconstruct the metadata on the newly replaced SSD from the remaining five intact HDDs? As a novice in ceph clusters, I seek advice from experienced users. Thank you.

Ceph RBD, MySQL write IOPs - what is possible?

I've been using MySQL on Ceph forever, and have been down this road before but it's been a couple of years so I wanted to see if there is anything new here. So the TL:DR version of this email - is there a good way to improve 16K write IOPs with a small number of threads? The OSDs themselves are idle so is this just a weakness in the algorithms or do ceph clients need some profiling? Or "other"? Basically, this is one of the worst possible Ceph workloads so it is fun to try to push the limits. I also happen have a MySQL instance that is reaching the write IOPs limit so this is also a last-ditch effort to keep it on Ceph. This cluster is as straightforward as it gets... 6 servers with 10 SSDs each, 100 Gb networking. I'm using size=3. During operations, the OSDs are more or less idle so I don't suspect any hardware limitations. MySQL has no parallelism so the number of threads and effective queue depth stay pretty low. Therefore, as a proxy for MySQL I use rados bench with 16K writes and 8 threads. The RBD actually gets about 2x this level - still not so great. multipart uploads in reef 18.2.2

We have a reef 18.2.2 cluster with 6 radosgw servers on Rocky 8.9. The radosgw servers are not fronted by anything like HAProxy as the clients connect directly to a DNS name via a round-robin DNS. Each of the radosgw servers have a certificate using SAN entries for all 6 radosgw servers as well as the primary DNS name. This has worked wonderfully for four years in distributing our load. This is an RPM install. Since our update to 18.2.2, we have had some issues with a specific set of clients (spark). They *always* create multipart uploads, both before and after the ceph update from 17.2.6 to 18.2.2, even when there is a single multipart part less than what would otherwise be the threshold. The single multipart part is the norm. This works fine for a time after restarting the radosgws. This is what happens: 1. The single PUT of a single multipart part with a given uploadId 2. The single POST to otherwise complete the multipart, with the same uploadId used in the PUT But when the problem occurs, the PUT works, but The POST fails with a "500 302" error, and the client will continue to try this, eventually returning with a reported error of: "Status code; 500 Error-Code: Internal error, ... The multipart completion is already in progress."While this error makes sense when multiple POSTs happen for the completion of the multipart upload, the first one should not fail. Sometimes the PUT and the POST happen from different clients or to different servers, even when things are working. But, when things begin to fail, just before the failed POST in the radosgw logs, I get: s3:complete_multipart failed to acquire lock Then the multiple "500 302" errors happen. Note that after the multiple "500 302" errors, the spark client DELETEs the object, terminating the multipart upload (no 'leftover' multipart uploads). There are about 50-60 multiparts happening when this occurs, and as time goes on, I get less and less successful multipart uploads, and eventually I have to restart the rados gateways. There are some other minor GETs and PUTs happening as well unrelated to spark When this happens, we get multiple sockets on the radosgw servers that are in CLOSE-WAIT state. While I cannot prove it, these appear to be related to the issue at hand as the CLOSE-WAIT states are only coming from IPs associated withthe spark jobs. After I restart the radosgw servers, things are good for a time, and all CLOSE-WAITs disappear until the problem starts. I have set: rgw thread pool size = 1024rgw max concurrent requests = 2048 and restarted both the mons and the radosgw servers to no avail. The problem takes maybe 6 hours to start No object versioning is in effect. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks. -Chris

Stuck OSD down/out + workaround

Hi ceph users, I've seen this happen a couple times and been meaning to ask the group about it. Sometimes I get a failed block device and I have to replace it. My normal process is - * stop the osd process * remove the osd from crush map * rm -rf /var/lib/ceph/osd/<cluster>-<osd>/* * run mkfs * start osd process * add osd to crush map Sometimes the osd will get "stuck" and it doesn't want to flip to up/in. I have to actually rm the osd.id from ceph itself then recreate the id then do all the above. Does anyone know why this could be? I'm on reef 18.2 but I've seen this a lot over the years. Question regarding bluestore labels

I have a question regarding bluestore labels, specifically for a block.db partition. To make a long story short, we are currently in a position where checking the label of a block.db partition and it appears corrupted. I have seen another thread on here suggesting to copy the label from a working OSD to the non working OSD, then re-adding the correct value to the labels with ceph-bluestore-tool. Where this was mentioned this was with an OSD in mind, would the same logic apply if we were working with a db device instead? This is assuming the only issue with the db is the corrupted label, and there is no other issues. Regards, Bailey

tuning for backup target cluster

Hi Everyone, I'm putting together a HDD cluster with an ECC pool dedicated to the backup environment. Traffic via s3. Version 18.2, 7 OSD nodes, 12 * 12TB HDD + 1NVME each, 4+2 ECC pool. Wondering if there is some general guidance for startup setup/tuning in regards to s3 object size. Files are read from fast storage (SSD/NVME) and written to s3. Files sizes are 10MB-1TB, so it's not standard s3. traffic. Backup for big files took hours to complete. My first shot would be to increase default bluestore_min_alloc_size_hdd, to reduce the number of stored objects, but I'm not sure if it's a good direccion? Any other parameters worth checking to support such a traffic pattern? Thanks! -- Łukasz

Excessively Chatty Daemons RHCS v5

Hi, I recently upgraded my RHCS cluster from v4 to v5 and moved to containerized daemons (podman) along the way. I noticed that there are a huge number of logs going to journald on each of my hosts. I am unsure why there are so many. I tried changing the logging level at runtime with commands like these (from the ceph docs): ceph tell osd.\* config set debug_osd 0/5 I tried adjusting several different subsystems (also with 0/0) but I noticed that logs seem to come at the same rate/content. I'm not sure what to try next? Is there a way to trace where logs are coming from? Rebalance OSDs after adding disks?

Hi, I have been curiuos about ceph for long time and now I started to experiment to find out, how it works. The idea I like most is, that ceph can provide growing storage without the need to move from storage x to storage y on consumer side. I started with a 3 node cluster where each node got one OSD (2x 500GB, 1x 1TB). I created the pool and the filesystem, mounted the filesystem and filled it with data. All three OSDs filled up evenly and when the pool reached 70%, I added two 1TB OSDs (each on the node with 500GB). Now I expected some activity to rebalance the fill level of the OSDs, but nothing special happened. The new OSDs got some data, but the 500GB OSDs ran into 95%, the pool reached 100%, everything got stuck with 2 OSDs filled up just 20% and left 80% free space? I searched the documentation how to initiate the rebalance/redistribution by hand but was unable to find anything. Can someone please point me to the docs how I can expand the capacity of the pool without such problems. Thanks in advance Thomas

CORS Problems

Dear Cephers, I am facing a Problem. I have updated our ceph cluster form 17.2.3 to 17.2.7 last week and i've just gotten complains about a website that is not able to use s3 via CORS anymore. (GET works, PUT does not). I am using cephadm and i have deployed 3 rgws + 2 ingress services. The bucket shows: aws s3api get-bucket-cors { "CORSRules": [ { "AllowedHeaders": [ "*" ], "AllowedMethods": [ "GET", "PUT" ], "AllowedOrigins": [ "*" ], "ExposeHeaders": [ "ETag", "Accept-Ranges", "Content-Encoding", "Content-Range" ] } ] } Which is supposed to be a working config (at least this was working until the update). Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https:/EXAMPLE.com[.....] (Reason: CORS header ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ missing). Status code: 403. I can not 100% say that the update is the culprit, but I haven't touched anything else and before the update it was working. Did I miss an important change? Best inDane

CephFS metadata pool size

Hello everyone, we have a cluster with 72 HDDs with 16TB and 3 SSDs with 4TB each in 3 Nodes. The 3 SSDs are used to store the metadata for the CephFS filesystem. After the update to 18.2.2 the size of the metadata pool went from around 2 TiB to over 3.5 TiB filling up the OSDs. After a few days they started to come back down but they did it not at the same rate. So one was stuck at 90% while the other ones came down to 80% - still way too high. After a few more days the highest one hit the full ratio limit and stopped all writes to the filesystem. I zapped the drive and let it rebuild at the moment. From my estimations, it will end up at ~ 1.9 TiB (~50%) where it should be. The other 2 OSDs are still filling up slowly and will hit full ratio soon. It looks like there is a leak of data that is not properly cleaned up by the MDS or OSD. But it will only rebuild the data that are actually in use. Can someone help me to cleanup the other 2 OSDs without rebuilding them because this takes a week for each of them. Any help is welcome. Adding new OSDs - also adding PGs?

Hi All, I'm going to be adding a bunch of OSDs to our cephfs cluster shortly (increasing the total size by 50%). We're on reef, and will be deploying using the cephadm method, and the OSDs are exactly the same size and disk type as the current ones. So, after adding the new OSDs, my understanding is that ceph will begin rebalancing the data. I will also probably want to increase my PGs to accommodate the new OSDs being added. My question is basically: should I wait for the rebalance to finish before increasing my PG count? Which would kick off another relabance action for the new PGs? Or, should I increase the PG count as soon as the rebalance action starts after adding the new OSDs, and it would then create new PGs and rebalance on the new OSDs at the same time? Hi, I'm using reef (18.2.2); the docs talk about setting up a multi-site setup with a spec file e.g. rgw_realm: apus rgw_zonegroup: apus_zg rgw_zone: eqiad placement: label: "rgw" but I don't think it's possible to configure the "hostnames" parameter of the zonegroup (and thus control what hostname(s) the rgws are expecting to serve)? Have I missed something, or do I need to set up the realm/zonegroup/zone, extract the zonegroup json and edit hostnames by hand? Thanks, Matthew

Update OS with clean install

Hi all I'm working on a way to automate the OS upgrade of our hosts. This happens with a complete reinstall of the OS. What is the correct way to do this? At the moment I'm using the following: * Store host labels (we use labels to deploy the services) * Fail-over MDS and MGR services if running on the host * Set host in maintenance mode * Reinstall host with newer OS * Remove host from cluster * Configure host with correct settings (for example cephadm user SSH key etc.) * Add host to cluster again with correct labels * For OSD hosts run ceph cephadm osd activate If somebody has some advice I would gladly hear about it! hi ... running against the wall, i need your help, again. our test stretched cluster is running fine. now i have 2 questions. whats the right way to add another pool? create pool with 4/2 and use the rule for the stretched mode, finished? the exsisting pools were automaticly set to 4/2 after "ceph mon enable_stretch_mode". the second question, we want to use ssd and nvme together. so, we need to have a second pool for class nvme. i don't know, how to setup a second crush rule for the nvme class. i thought, that i need to filter with 2 rules for the classes. is that correct? thanks for help, ronny

Hi, if you can verify which data has been removed, and that client is still connected, you might find out who was responsible for that. Do you know which files in which directories are missing? Does that maybe already reveal one or several users/clients? You can query the mds daemons and inspect the session output, it shows which directories are mounted (if you use kernel client): quincy-1:~ # ceph tell mds.quincy-1.yrgpqm session ls I doubt that you'll find much in the logs if you don't have debug enabled, but it might be worth checking anyway. About placement group scrubbing state

Hi everyone, I want to know about the scrubbing state placement group, my cluster has too many pg in state scrubbing and it's increasing over time, maybe scrubbing takes too long. Find PG mappings without upmap

Hi, I'm working on a script, and I would like to find where a specific PG would be mapped without the existing upmap . For what I can see, all the commands I can think of, will always report the current mapping, not the original mapping that crush without upmap exceptions would output. I've been trying to query ceph, or even use osdmaptool, but as osdmaptool requires the OSD map -and I don't see how I can remove the upmaps from a downloaded osdmap file-. Any ideas? Thanks! Xavier

Reef: RGW Multisite object fetch limits

Hello Community, We've two zones with Reef (v18.2.1) and trying to sync over 2 billion RGW objects to the secondary zone. We've added a fresh secondary zone and each zones have 2 RGW dedicated daemons (behind LB) each and only for multisite; whereas others don't run sync threads. Strange thing is that during the sync, the master zone LB records only 1k to 1.5k HTTP requests per second from secondary zone RGWs and not more than that. This behaviour leaves us with less link utilization. I don't see any noticeable issues with the link, cluster or RGW daemons on both ends. We've already increased rgw_data_sync_spawn_window, rgw_bucket_sync_spawn_window, rgw_meta_sync_spawn_window values to more than the defaults and don't seem to improve. Has someone noticed this behaviour of secondary zone RGW daemons fetching only around 1k to 1.5k objects per second? Regards, Jayanth

rgw mgr module not shipped? (in reef at least)

Hi, As far as I can tell, the rgw mgr module is not shipped in the published reef Debian packages (nor, I suspect, the ubuntu ones, but I've not actually checked). Is there a reason why it couldn't just be added to ceph-mgr-modules-core ? That contains quite a large number of modules already, and the rgw one is effectively one small python file, I think... I'm using 18.2.2. Thanks, Matthew
