I am quite sure we could use it. I have this script running. I can *start*

Sure. Running this from the build directory should just work:
sudo ./bin/rbd-nbd map $pool/$image
./bin/rbd-nbd list-mapped
sudo ./bin/rbd-nbd unmap $pool/$image
