For rbd in particular, we try to be as compatible as possible -- we have actually rejected some improvements to structured output (--format json or --format xml) in the past to stay compatible. As long as you stick to structured output instead of parsing human-readable output, I would expect the same shell script to work for quite for a number of releases, but it's not really tested.
