Thanks for the info! That prompted me to read up some more on this.
RTD is actually quite open and honest about their advertising model [1]
and they do provide options to opt out of paid ads [2], so that's
definitely an option that we should consider disabling, if we haven't
done so already.
At present, I personally feel that the benefits of hosting the docs on
their platform vs. doing it on our own infrastructure are an acceptable
trade-off for ads, especially if these are about other open source
projects only.

I think many see the similarities to things like Sourceforge and related sites
that were very free/open source friendly, but then at some point decided money
was better than ethics, sold it off to someone else who started to inject scary
malware into the downloadable installers.

Everyone that doesn't scramble off such a site quickly as soon as this becomes public
will get their reputation tainted if such an event happens.

Not saying it will, just remembering that it has happened before and that you don't get
any advance warning when the hosters turn to evil practices.
