Hi everyone,
We are in the process of migrating from docs.ceph.com to
ceph.readthedocs.io. We enabled it in
https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/34499 and will now be using it by
default.
Why?
- The search feature in ceph.readthedocs.io is much better than
docs.ceph.com and allows you to search multiple strings.
- RTD provides an in-built version switching feature which we plan to
use in future.
What does it mean to you?
- Some broken links are expected during this migration. Things like
ceph API documentation need special handling (example:
https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rados/api/) and are expected to be
broken temporarily.
- Much better Ceph documentation experience once the migration is done.

Can you please elaborate on that? What are you referring to? I'm
not
aware of any advertisements on RTD, but I admittedly have several

Thanks for the info! That prompted me to read up some more on this.
RTD is actually quite open and honest about their advertising model [1]
and they do provide options to opt out of paid ads [2], so that's
definitely an option that we should consider disabling, if we haven't
done so already.
At present, I personally feel that the benefits of hosting the docs on
their platform vs. doing it on our own infrastructure are an acceptable
trade-off for ads, especially if these are about other open source
projects only.
As RTD is really an aggregation point for a lot of other open source
projects, it may also help us to gain visibility.
Of course, if "natural evolution" really kicks in and things get too
intrusive/annoying, we should re-evaluate this and take action accordingly.

that were very free/open source friendly, but then at some point decided

was better than ethics, sold it off to someone else who started to inject

Everyone that doesn't scramble off such a site quickly as soon as this

will get their reputation tainted if such an event happens.
Not saying it will, just remembering that it has happened before and that
you don't get
any advance warning when the hosters turn to evil practices.
